NCR POS Aloha system has evolved through time

You might run an amazing coffee shop, a quick service restaurant or a cafe but business doesn’t stop at your latte or oriental soup as enjoyed, you still have employees to track, inventory to manage and customers to engage, knowing what is going on at the back office and if customers are getting your most recent offer. NCR Aloha point of sale has you covered and in today’s food business, we have some background on why this is the case.

NCR is a fortune 500 company that really aims to lead how the world connects, interacts and transacts with businesses and as you can see our purpose really is to run everyday transactions that make people’s lives a little bit easier. If you go to a restaurant, you will see the NCR logo somewhere. Here’s a synopsis of how this little simple machine grew into a giant industry that it is today.

first cash register

The first cash register was invented in 1879 by James Ritty, a saloonkeeper. It is a device that automatically records sales and supposedly a way to keep his bartenders honest. Unfortunately, it wasn’t able to curtail employee theft but it did create a massive industry through the years and generations later coined it with the phrase ka-ching!

Five years later, in 1884, NCR company founder, John H. Patterson bought two of the registers from Mr. Ritty and he liked them so much that he bought the company and renamed it to National Cash Registers company or NCR for short. And as you can see, he has come a long way. The company is still going strong after 129 years later. Now literally the start of the POS era goes back to 1972 when NCR produced 10 million machines and that was called the Class 280 retail system with an electronic “wand” that captures data for computer processing. This is of course considered very much obsolete already as there are a lot of changes in technology nowadays to keep up with the demands of modern quick service restaurants, coffee shop or cafe to run smoothly and to really be streamlined for your QSR business.

 stubborn restaurant owners

In a standard quick service restaurant location, there’s a lot going on everyday. You got employees who need to track their hours and schedules, you got inventory that needs to be tracked, you’ve got technology to keep orders running smoothly and then of course you want to know all your back office operations like menu set up, reporting  and all of these require a lot of technology. Also most recently, a few more marketing functions have become popular or standard and the first would be email marketing and the 2nd being the customer loyalty program.

However, there are still a lot of stubborn restaurant owners who are using the traditional and outdated POS systems and as a result they opened themselves up to a host of POS problems, including insecurity, inaccurate reporting, and a lack of modern functions including social media and email marketing. These restaurant businesses would not upgrade because of the cost and associated risk of  switching like lost sales, frustrated employees, data loss, etc. One very important feature of an NCR Aloha POS system that is not offered in an old POS system is the credit card functionality. Using a separate credit card machine can be alright, but what if your internet goes down during a transaction. What will you do? Your customers definitely do not have the time to wait until you have this sorted out. Issues like this usually takes a lot of time to fix.
